How can 19th c design relate to modern lives?

Many chairs from 19th c Western countries look uncomfortable by today’s standards because people sat differently then. Letting their backs touch the backs of chairs was an example of very poor breeding.

Today, everyone tends to lounge in chairs. But chairs in bedrooms are more often used when dressing and undressing, either as places that hold clothes or places to sit while dressing.

The Bentwood Bedroom Chair offers both a place to briefly sit and to store one’s clothes.

The Bentwood Chair

The chair back becomes a clothing receptacle and a chair back that, like Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s dining room chairs, was never meant to be leaned upon.

The Bentwood Wardrobe Rack

A hybrid coat rack/wardrobe offers a beautiful space to toss your clothes after an exhausting day. As sustainable living strategies become more prevalent, more people are going to re-wear gently worn clothing before putting it in the washing machine. The Bentwood Dressing Rack lets users sort their lightly worn clothing from the freshly washed clothing they keep in their closets. Its open design lets clothing air out between uses.

The Bentwood Lamp

As the importance of sleep hygiene becomes more common knowledge, the Bentwood Lamp washes your bedroom in beautiful lighting, helping the owner set a calming mood before bed.

Gently curving wood characterized each piece, not just in a nod to Michael Thonet, but to bring a presence of stable warmth and softness to the bedroom.

These pieces, along with steam steam bending wood experiments, were started shortly before lockdown began in 2020. Consequently, the project was never realized beyond CAD renderings.
